  5.     Only a few days earlier, the governor of Manchester's
  6. Strange ways Prison had pronounced it "the fastest-improving
  7. establishment in the country." Not for long. As if to mock that
  8. boast, most of the prison's 1,648 inmates went on a rampage
  9. last week to protest against overcrowding and outdated
  10. facilities. At least two died and scores were injured in the
  11. red brick relic, which was built in 1868 to incarcerate 970
  12. men.

  14.     Rioting started at a Sunday-morning service when one man
  15. charged down the aisle, hit the chaplain in the face, grabbed
  16. his microphone and started yelling obscenities into it. As the
  17. revolt spread, inmates brutalized other prisoners and smashed
  18. and set fire to the facility. Some climbed on roofs and threw
  19. tiles at riot police who gathered below. Strange ways governor
  20. Brendan O'Friel described the outburst as "an explosion of evil
  21. . . . possibly the worst incident in the history of the prison
  22. service."
